How might we balance care and autonomy when supporting people with disabilitites?

What the interviews data revealed

Interview with a person with a psychological disability working in an inclusion company:

“For me, support starts when I can say about myself or say to myself: ‘You need help now. You can / you can dare to ask. You know for sure that this person will help you.”

Change of perspective

Everybody has needs and abilities, but for people with disabilities, it is more common to highlight their needs rather than abilities.

Showcase the experiences of people with disabilities as empowering and asset-rich, not merely needs-based or requiring constant support.

Natural abilities

Everybody has intrinsic skills that are innate and uniquely their own, providing a natural foundation for personal and professional growth.

Emphasize the importance of soft and non-technical skills to facilitate the transition to the labor market. Highlighting these skills can show people with disabilities that they already possess the abilities needed to succeed.

Empowering support

There is a distinction between support that empowers and support that hinders.

Encourage people with disabilities (PwD) to identify and focus on their strengths. Assess what abilities they already possess and determine what areas need further development.
